Rio - is a huge 32" x 40" artwork depicting a panoramic overview of the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Its made on canvas with acrylic and pastels. It celebrates the beauty found in Brazil, and the sense of community in the people from there despite having one of the biggest racially diverse countries in the world.
Metaphorically, it represents the symbol of the union between diverse groups. Bringing together the developed and urbanized part of Rio De Janeiro with that of its least developed part through the distortion of the actual landscape in the effort to clearly show the existence of inequality.
These two different demographics are represented by the high rises of Rio on the left and the "slums" known as the Favelas to the right.
As they appear on the canvas the high rises aim to symbolize the socially and economically well-off societies, while the Favelas represent the “slum” societies of the world. Where hope for a better life and living conditions could not be further from the realities of their circumstances. Although it celebrates the beauty of the land and the level of coexistence of diverse people, by the same token it aims to shed light on the existing global racial-economic inequality reflected within any society you take a look at no matter how far you might live from it.
